Why Global Engagement Trips?

Since our founding in London in 1844, the YMCA has grown to serve millions of individuals—children, adults, families, and seniors—across 120+ countries, by constantly asking, "How can the YMCA serve the needs of our community?"

In 2018, the Arlington-Mansfield Community Needs Assessment identified a gap in connecting with newcomer, immigrant, and indigenous communities. In response, we began visiting their countries of origin, gaining firsthand insights into their environments, and engaging in meaningful conversations with immigrants and indigenous peoples. These efforts deepened our understanding, fostered meaningful engagement, and built trust.

Today, our local YMCA membership continues to grow as newcomer, immigrant, and indigenous peoples feel welcomed and understood.

For those who journey on a YMCA Global Engagement trip, the experience often has a profound personal impact, leaving them with a greater sense of appreciation and understanding of the blessings and privileges we all share as Americans. It also deepens one's connection with the YMCA movement.

"TRAVEL IS FATAL TO PREJUDICE, BIGOTRY, AND NARROW-MINDEDNESS, AND MANY OF OUR PEOPLE NEED IT SORELY ON THESE ACCOUNTS. BROAD, WHOLESOME, CHARITABLE VIEWS OF MEN AND THINGS CANNOT BE ACQUIRED BY VEGETATING IN ONE LITTLE CORNER OF THE EARTH ALL ONE'S LIFETIME."                                                                                                                                                                             Author Mark Twain
