When in the Neighborhood Program

The YMCA’s "When in the Neighborhood" program is an optional travel extension designed to complement our Global Engagement Trips. It allows participants, who are already traveling abroad for a YMCA service experience, to add a short visit to a nearby country or region.

Unlike the structured Global Engagement Trip itinerary, the When in the Neighborhood program is more relaxed, less formal, and not as highly organized, giving participants extra free time to explore, recharge, and enjoy the experience at their own pace. These extensions are typically taken after the primary trip, when participants are already adjusted to the local time zone, making it easier to relax and fully enjoy the added experience. A trip leader also participates in this extension, providing guidance, support, and continuity throughout the journey.

These add-on opportunities create space to deepen global understanding, experience local culture, and build stronger connections—all while making the most of international travel participants are already undertaking.

When do I register?

"When in the Neighborhood" program registration details are reviewed at the first pre-trip meeting, typically 90 days before the primary trip departure.  There is no need to register or pay for the program until that time.  Your trip leader will help you through the process.
